Upon reflection, I've been safe, despite the many varied and stupid things I've done while traveling and working abroad. Stupid because they were done without thought. Stupid because the consequences, had they developed, were dire.
So, I've been lucky. And, the worlds where I have been have been relatively safe. A bit war-torn and haggard, definitely poor, but also gracious and inviting.
Guatemala, Nicaragua, Mexico, Costa Rica: Kid friendly, hard working, dedicated, working to building a better life kind of people. Not without the pockets of bad characters, but at the core sound and safe...as long as you are thoughtful and travel with care.
